That's right I have a summer job as a camp counselor. Pray for the little children, hell, pray for me!
Alexis and Nicole will be joining me as Jr. Counselors. Alexis will be stuck with me as she is suffering a hand injury and Nicole will be out helping instruct tennis. Much to Alexis' dismay.
Alexis, my little dare devil, okay I have two dare devils, but it's Alexis that stands out in this story. On May third Alexis injured her hand while playing soccer. Of course she just has to play goalie. She not only dislocated her thumb but snapped the tendons as well. So two specialists, and two hospitals and an ambulance ride later finds us in the Halifax medical center with the only hand surgeon available in Volusia county.
The kid was doing fine until the first doctor said "the tendons might be snapped" She looks at me with alarm and says, "Mom, the tendons control movement." As I watch her get more and more concerned the Orthopedic finally puts her in a conscience sedation. I had to leave the room, that kid was all over the place.
When he has done all he can do he comes out with this defeated look and tells me,"There's nothing more I can do for her, the tendons are snapped." How dramatic! Was he trying to freak me out or what! So I calmly say, (yeah right) "OMG! What are we going to do?" He then comes to he comes to his senses and tells me he will find a surgeon for Alexis. My hero.
So Alexis wakes up before I return to the room and some maroon tells her the thumb was fine! I walk into the room and she's crying for the first time since this whole thing began. She's saying," Mom, these are tears of joy , I so happy my thumb is fixed! I was so afraid I wasn't going to be able to be a pilot!" Now, I'm just heart sick and PO'D at the nurse. I decided wait until they found a surgeon before I broke the news to her.
So my Hero found the specialist, which fixed her thumb and now he is the new Hero of this story. Whom ( or is it who?)I might add was a little surprised when I threw my arms around him and thanked him profusely.
I'm happy to say after a gruelling month of Alexis being ban from any sport or P.E. class is now cast free! Well, almost, still needs it while sleeping. Thumb can't be bent backwards as it's still healing. A few more weeks of therapy is hopefully all she needs.
